Caring for your Miniature Highland

Caring for Your Miniature Highland

Bringing home a Miniature cow — or planning for one — is an exciting step! These gentle, intelligent animals make wonderful companions, but they do have specific care needs to ensure they live a happy, healthy life.

Daily Essentials

Your mini cow depends on you for consistent, quality care. The basics include:

• High-quality hay
Hay should make up the foundation of your mini’s diet. Good grass hay supports proper digestion and overall health.

• Fresh, clean water
Mini cows drink more than many people expect. They must have access to clean water at all times, especially in hot weather.

• Minerals and supplements
Loose cattle minerals formulated for your region help provide nutrients that may be missing from forage and hay.

• Shelter
A three-sided shelter or barn protects your mini from wind, rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.

• Shade
In warmer months, shade is essential to prevent overheating. Trees or a shaded structure work well.

• Predator protection
Depending on your area, fencing and possibly livestock guardian animals may be needed to keep your mini safe from predators.

Health & Hoof Care

Just like any livestock animal, miniature cattle require routine health care.

• A knowledgeable veterinarian
Establish a relationship with a vet who is experienced with cattle. They’ll guide you on vaccinations, parasite control, and overall herd health.

• Regular vaccinations
Your vet will recommend a vaccination schedule based on your region and herd exposure risks.

• Hoof maintenance
Mini cows may occasionally need hoof trimming, especially if they are on soft ground and not naturally wearing their hooves down.

• Parasite management
Routine fecal checks and deworming (when needed) help keep your mini in top condition.

Social & Emotional Well-Being

Miniature cows are herd animals and thrive with companionship. Whenever possible, they should have another bovine friend. They also enjoy gentle human interaction and quickly become part of the family.
